Traditionally, farmers have relied on agrochemicals to boost crop yields and control pests and weeds. However, concerns about the potential impact of these chemicals on human health and the environment have prompted a reevaluation of their use. A continuous review of the active ingredients used in agricultural inputs has led to the banning of many agrochemicals across the globe. For instance, since 2018, the European Union (EU) has banned over 70 pesticides and many countries have since moved to prohibit the use and export of different agrochemicals.
There is a growing trend to reduce the use of chemicals in agriculture and promote organic farming practices, including the use of biological controls which offer safer and more sustainable crop protection.
The global shift from the reliance on chemical-intensive farming to the adoption of biological controls is gaining momentum as farmers, policymakers and consumers recognize the need to build more resilient agricultural systems.
In Sub-Sahara Africa, it is estimated that 70% of agricultural production is by smallholder farmers (SHF). Data from AgNexus’ AgriTrack™ studies reveal that the adoption of biologicals among African SHFs is still in the early adoption stage.
According to AgNexus’ study in Kenya, investments for crop production by SHF are crop protection (%), seeds (%), and fertilisers (%). Major investments for crop protection are in herbicides (37,8%), insecticides (34.9%), fungicides (25.3%) and biological controls (0.2%).
From the AgriTrack™ studies, it is clear that there is minimal uptake of biologicals from Agrodealers. This raises critical questions about the underlying factors contributing to this low adoption rate. It would be interesting to know whether the low adoption of biologicals is indicative of low demand from farmers, insufficient awareness and knowledge, availability and affordability constraints, perception, or the absence of supportive policies. A balanced approach could help address these complexities and foster sustainable agricultural practices.

There may be a need to enhance awareness among farmers and stakeholders in the agriculture sector and create policy support to empower farmers to embrace biological controls and watch out for harmful agrochemicals thus promoting sustainable farming for the benefit of farmers, consumers, and the environment.
